General J.H. Doolittle
   Tokyo Raiders Reunion, 2003

The United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. Although the reasons were varied and complex, the one having the greatest emotional impact upon the 'average American' was Germany's introduction of unrestricted submarine warfare which followed the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915. Our exhibit not only includes 94th Aero Squadron artifacts and documentation, but original copies of the “Stars and Stripes” newspaper.

94th Aero Squadron

The 94th Aero Squadron was the first American squadron to cross the French lines in WWI to fight over German territory. Its commanders included air combat theorist Raoul Lufbery and Captain "Eddie" Rickenbacker.

Stars and Stripes

From February 8, 1918, to June 13, 1919, by order of General John J. Pershing, the United States Army published a newspaper for its forces in France, The Stars and Stripes.
